@ Putnam History Museum

Detailed Times/Hours: This exhibition will be on view for the entire month of the HRV Ramble during the museum's open hours. Wed-Sun, 12 pm - 4 pm.

“Healing Hudson,” by Selva Ozelli, explores the Hudson Valley’s importance in sparking the environmental movement in the U.S., which took off worldwide. The art on display features Darter Fish, which live in highly oxygenated fresh waters and received their name for their tendency to move in short bursts of motion. They are highlighted as an endangered species that once darted around the Hudson watershed, that the artist imagines may one day return to their home. Selva Ozelli is an environmentalist who expresses this sentiment as an artist, writer and lawyer. She is an award winning artist whose paintings have been acknowledged in 19 international art contests and exhibited in over 100 art shows by numerous museums, the United Nations, ministries and NGOs across the world.

@ John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary at Slabsides

Detailed Times/Hours: 9:00 am to approximately 11:00 pm. Rain or shine. From 11:30 am until 4:00 pm you are invited to tour John Burroughs' rustic 1895 cabin retreat "Slabsides," a National Historic Landmark and a Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area of Special interest. Through works written there about nature, John Burroughs had a profound impact on the emerging conservation movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s. He inspired generations of readers to head out of doors and national leaders to preserve land and its wildlife.

The rocks were one of naturalist John Burroughs' favorite aspects of the Slabsides location, but even he did not realize that the rocks represented sediments eroded from a Himalayan-scale mountain range nearly 400 million years ago. Since they were deposited in a shallow sea, the sediments were repeatedly caught in continental collisions which bent them and stood them literally on end. As if that wasn't enough, they were most recently scraped clean by a mile-thick sheet of glacial ice which melted a mere 14,000 years ago. Join Vassar College professor of earth sciences Jeff Walker for hike to read the many stories in the rocks of the John Burroughs Nature Sanctuary. We are a 7th-generation family-run pick-your-own apple farm with a pumpkin orchard and are just minutes from the thruway about 1.5 hours north of NYC. This is a self-guided, Geotourist app tour of Kinderhook's historic Village Square and surrounds. The focus of the tour is on the cultural and community character that Kinderhook's village square and a few sites beyond the square illuminate. Those taking the tour will learn about why Kinderhook looks the way it does; who the area's first inhabitants were; Kinderhook's history of cultural diversity; the origins of the name Kinderhook; the importance of town squares and village greens to community life; the development of the post office, hotels, and automobile tourism; and much more that will surprise those who take this delightful tour.

The Pink & Blue art show at Howland Cultural Center from Aug 10 to Sep 29, 2024, celebrates how the environmental movement in the US began in the Hudson Valley and spread around the world. The folk singer Pete Seeger who lived in Beacon, NY is most associated with the Environmental movement in the Putnam Valley. He established an organization called Clearwater, which built a sloop that is free for the public to ride from Beacon to explore the beauty of the Hudson River. In 2004, the sloop Clearwater was named to the National Register of Historic Places for its groundbreaking role in the environmental movement and its dedication to the preservation of the Hudson River. @ Historic Cherry Hill

The Rankins of Cherry Hill: Struggling with the Loss of their World tour tells the story of how the last two generations at Cherry Hill responded to social, economic, and personal change at the turn of the 20th century. Artifacts in each room vividly tell the story of Catherine Rankin’s loss of her wealth and near loss of her ancestral home—and her family’s struggle to regain their financial standing and restore Cherry Hill to its colonial grandeur- while watching industry and an immigrant working class neighborhood grow up around the property. This “warts and all” tour addresses such topics as immigration, women’s suffrage, American identity, and the roots of prejudice.

@ Saratoga National Historical Park Visitor Center Lawn

Listen to stirring tunes that eased the drudgery of a long march, or the many calls that regulated activity in a fort. Explore how drumbeats, trilling fifes, and songs created an 18th-century world of military music. Saratoga Arts made this program possible through the Community Arts Regrant Program, funded by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature. This support was gained by the Friends of Saratoga Battlefield.

Explore the Square House Inn and Tavern Museum, a historic landmark steeped in stories from America’s past. Originally built in 1730 as a residence, it later became an inn and tavern hosting notable figures of the Revolutionary era. John and Sam Adams stopped here on their way to the 1st Continental Congress, and George Washington stayed twice during his presidency. In 1824, Marquis de Lafayette dined at the inn during his return to America. Guided tours of the Square House offer a glimpse into its rich history: • Step into the colonial Entry Hall, where visitors historically arrived. • Experience the Tavern Room, once exclusive to men. • Visit the Warming Kitchen, where daily life tasks such as washing, candle making, and food preparation unfolded. • Discover the Council Room, added in the 1780s, which served as the municipal hall from 1904 to 1964. • See a colonial bedroom, showcasing a stark contrast to modern accommodations. @ Mount Gulian Historic Site

Visitors will hear about Mount Gulian’s centuries-long history that shaped our nation, including its part in the Revolutionary War as Patriot General Von Steuben’s headquarters, and the history of generations of Verplanck family members who lived here. Our truly unique White Glove Tour allows visitors to hold and examine artifacts representing 300 years of history. Everyone will put on white, cotton, curatorial gloves before handling artifacts and documents relating to the Verplanck Family, the American Revolution, and much more.

@ Copake Iron Works Historic Site

Detailed Times/Hours: The Copake Iron Works Museum and Pomeroy Family Railroad are open Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays through mid-October. The Visitor Center and Historic Site are open for self-guided tours year-round during daylight hours.

Tour the Copake Iron Works National Heritage Area Site which includes the largest intact grouping of buildings and structures in the northeast iron district. Ride the Pomeroy Family Railroad to into the heart of the Iron Works.

@ Hudson River Maritime Museum

Join D&H Canal Historical Society Historian and Curator Bill Merchant for an engaging conversation about the history of the Delaware & Hudson Canal and the industrial port of Rondout. Bill will bring a different historical artifact from the D&H Canal Historical Society collections for discussion on each trip. Quiet and comfortable Solaris will take you up Rondout Creek to Lock No. 1 at Eddyville - the first lock and weigh lock on the D&H Canal.

@ Mountain Top Arboretum

In their most original work yet, Bob and Johanna Titus will discuss their new book, The Hudson River Schools of Art and their Ice Age Origins. They examine how the Hudson Valley’s specific and unique ice-age history had an unexpected consequence: the rise of the Hudson River School of Art, the first truly American school of painting, and also the landscape architecture and literature of the same period in the Hudson Valley. They tell in detail how the landscapes which inspired artists such as Thomas Cole, Asher Durand, Frederick Edwin Church and Sanford Gifford were sculpted by glaciers and ice age processes, with specific examples and locations, including places readers can visit today. Books will be available for purchase and refreshments will be served.

@ Westmoreland Sanctuary

Detailed Times/Hours: Westmoreland is open, staffed and free 7 days a week, 9-5. We are always happy to welcome visitors to the museum, grounds and hiking trails.

Westmoreland Sanctuary is excited to host a guided nature hike as part of the Hudson River Valley Ramble. The 1 hour and 1-mile-long hike will be led by Westmoreland Naturalist, Joshua Cohen. Weave in and out of fields and forests as you take in the serene beauty of Westmoreland’s educational campus. Learn about nature in the summer, forest and pond ecology, Westchester history, and native plants and animals. Hike begins at 11:10 AM, meet inside the Westmoreland Sanctuary Natural Science Museum, the hike will end at the Museum as well. The museum is a short walk from the parking area. Other features at Westmoreland Sanctuary include a terrace garden with a small pond and children's playhouse, picnic area, live animals and exhibits within the museum and 8.5 miles of hiking trails. @ Papscanee Island Nature Preserve

Led by David Chinery from the Cornell Cooperative Extension, enjoy a 1-hour walk through the Papscanee Island Nature Preserve and discover the various species of plants and animals that make the 156-acre Preserve and Hudson River shoreline their home. Cottonwood trees, buckthorn shrub, and bittersweet vine reflect the history of the land farmed by the Mohican Indians for hundreds of years. The preserve also boasts a variety of habitats, including marsh, river bank, and floodplain. This riparian setting is a pristine example of nature reinventing itself. Over 30 acres of the preserve are still farmed today, giving the land the distinction of being under active agriculture (corn) longer than any other lands in the U.S. Over six miles of hiking trails offer public access to over 2 miles of Hudson River shoreline. From 9J, turn Right at Preserve South Entrance sign onto Staats Island Rd.; go .25 mi. cross Amtrak tracks, right into Preserve parking lot.

Detailed Times/Hours: The guided walking tour is two hours. a leisurely walk covering only a few blocks in downtown Poughkeepsie. This is a 2 hour guided walking tour led by noted artist and muralist, FRANC PALAIA of public art in Poughkeepsie, NY. The leisurely tour includes over 45 indoor and outdoor murals, sculptures, historical monuments, architecture in a three block area of downtown Poughkeepsie. The tour highlights several New Deal era murals commissioned by FDR, large scale contemporary murals, 9/11 and Vietnam monuments, one sculpture park and several very new graffiti style street art wall works. The tour ends in restaurant row on Main St Poughkeepsie where several new gourmet and ethnic restaurants have opened. The tour group can stay for lunch or coffee, a great opportunity to review and discuss the tour with the guide. A restaurant stop is not part of the tour, only a suggested option.

Birds were the first love of literary naturalist John Burroughs when he was writing at the turn of the Twentieth Century. Then as now, the land surrounding his cabin Slabsides was abundant with bird life and at this time of year migrating songbirds en route to wintering grounds in South America are stopping off. Discover the richness of tree-top bird life through sight and song with Mark DeDea, president of our sister organization, the John Burroughs Natural History Society. Beginning birders through advanced are welcome.

@ Zofnass Family Preserve

Detailed Times/Hours: Please arrive promptly at 10:00 so the tour can begin on time.

Come take a guided tree hike with WLT's land preserve manager, Ben! He will carve a path through the nearly 7.5 miles of trails to identify some of our most loved native trees. The trail system features hundreds of stepping stones for crossing streams and wetlands, a 50-foot tall “grand” stone staircase, and dozens of educational signs and small notes pointing out the preserve’s many interesting and fun features.

@ Springside: National Historic Landmark

Detailed Times/Hours: Springside is open every day from dawn until dusk.

Recent excavation of the Gardener's Cottage unearthed a poem that local scholars believe contains the clues to Matthew Vassar's hidden treasure at Springside. Join volunteers of Springside Landscape Restoration for a guided tour of Andrew Jackson Downing's historic landscape and receive a copy of the treasure hunt poem and site map for further exploration and amusement. Springside is a 20-acre designed landscape and historic site that was once the county estate of Matthew Vassar and is the only landscape of Andrew Jackson Downing to survive largely intact. Today, the National Historic Landmark is a historic site on the Hudson River Valley Greenway Trail.

@ Sylvan Glen Park Preserve, Eastern Trail Head

The 2.5-mile hike is led by New York New Jersey Trail Conference volunteers and will explore the quarries and surrounding natural areas at Sylvan Glen Park Preserve. The Mohegan Quarry operated from 1890-1941 and supplied honey-colored granite for several buildings in New York City, including the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Some of the abandoned cables, machinery, and building foundations are still visible along the trails. The hike includes a visit to the Quarry Oak, an 18-foot circumference white oak dating from colonial times.

@ Tackamac Town Park

Join David A Steinberg, author, "Hiking the Road to Ruins (rev)" as we explore an abandoned National Guard shooting range. Event includes some climbing, bushwhacking, and stepping over, through and around structures. We will be walking through tunnels that are dark and may contain some water. Bring a flashlight and some nerve. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase.

@ Croton Yacht Club

Detailed Times/Hours: 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

The sails aboard Whimbrel, our sloop-rigged Catboat, will depart at 11AM, 12PM, 1PM, 2PM, and 3PM. Each sail will be approximately 45 minutes long. The free sails are on a "first come, first served" basis. No reservations will be accepted prior to the sail day. Guests can sign up at the Ferry Sloops table (under the big white tent) beginning at 10:00am for any of the day’s scheduled sail times. (limit of 4 passengers per sail). The boat's captain reserves the right to cancel any or all of the day's sails, if weather conditions make it unsafe for sailing. There is NO Rain date. Passenger age requirement: must be at least 12 years old, under 18 years old must be accompanied by parent or adult guardian (no exceptions).

Following the street plan designed by Peter Stuyvesant in 1658, the tour walks the heart of the largest intact early Dutch settlement in New York State and the neighborhood where New York State was born in 1777. Walking tour highlights include viewing the many eighteenth century limestone houses still standing in the Stockade District, and visiting the site of the drafting of the New York State Constitution in 1777 and the gravesite of New York’s first elected governor, George Clinton, in the Old Dutch Church Burying Ground.

@ The Hudson River Maritime Museum's Wooden Boat School

Detailed Times/Hours: Sun., Sept. 8, 10 AM to 5 PM

"Live edge" furniture pieces retain the wood's original shape and natural appearance. In this class, you'll get the chance to create your own live edge coffee table from start to finish. Each student will get to pick a flitch of locally harvested hardwood, then use draw knives, sanders, and other hand tools to remove any bark and smooth the live edge. Students will cut their piece to custom dimensions followed by planing and smoothing. Finally, a set of legs will be attached. Each student will leave with their own coffee table ready for application with their choice of finish.

@ Lyndhurst

Detailed Times/Hours: Open daily 9:30 - 5 pm

This two-hour, two-mile ramble offers a complete overview of Lyndhurst’s historic landscape. This 67-acre Lower Westchester site reflects 180 years of grand estate living on the Hudson River. Visitors will stroll past specimen trees, including the majestic lindens for which the property was named, then walk through the Lord & Burnham greenhouse frame, rose and fern gardens, and enter the ruined swimming pool building. Walk along restored pathways to historic rockeries with spectacular views of the Hudson River. The tour culminates inside the 1894 bowling pavilion with an exhibit dedicated to two women philanthropists.

Detailed Times/Hours: 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. 30-minute Kayaking Sessions. Creekside 1-mile Walking Tour at 1:00 p.m. The walk lasts approximately one hour.

Join the Quassaick Creek Watershed Alliance and the Newburgh Waterways Center along with other community partners for a day of play along the waterway! Discover Quassaick Creek with a paddle on Muchattoes Lake with experienced kayaking guides or tour the creek on a guided 1-hour informative walk, making brief stops to review its vast history. The guided 1-mile hike is easy difficulty as most are on even terrain and walking trails. Stephen F. Byrns, who is an architect and the founder and President of the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy leads this monthly tour. He is a fount of in-depth knowledge on the history of the property, on Samuel Untermyer and his historical milieu, on the architecture, especially the Indo-Persian Walled Garden and on his vision for the future of this Landmark restoration. Please join us near the 945 North Broadway Parking lot for a 90 minute tour of the gardens. Children twelve and under are free. As the tour goes down the steps of the Vista and then back up a woodland path to the Temple of Love, we suggest sturdy shoes. Strollers are not advised for the tours.

Come to the D&H Canal Museum in High Falls and take a free guided tour of the national historic landmark Five Lock Walk. See five restored locks from the final 1850 enlargement of the D&H Canal, the first million dollar private enterprise in US history. The Canal ran for 108 miles from Honesdale PA to Rondout NY to bring coal from Carbondale PA to NYC, running from 1828 through 1898. The Canal fueled the industrial revolution in America and helped make NYC the world's largest city. It informed the 19C history of all the towns along its route. Approximately 1/2 mile.

Visit the only known residence built in the form of a domed, ancient classical temple. Created as a whimsical summer retreat in 1872 by tea-importer Joseph Stiner, this National Historic Landmark's shape was based on the theories of Orson Squire Fowler, a phrenologist, who believed octagonal houses enclosed more space, allowed the sun in at all times, and permitted more views into the landscape. This lyrical home retains its magnificent ornamentation and furnishings and the only remaining Egyptian Revival Room in America with its original decoration and furniture. The 1-hour tour is conducted by highly trained docents and includes the three principal floors of the house.

For countless generations, the Lenape People relied on the Hudson River and its tributaries for their survival. Drift with us into the past on a tour led by ethnoecologist Justin Wexler to learn about the day to day life of local native peoples five centuries ago. Justin Wexler of Wild Hudson Valley is an independent scholar who has studied Hudson Valley indigenous culture, languages, and history for over twenty years. He regularly works with members of their displaced federally-recognized communities, hosting tribe members on visits to their ancestral homeland and helping to connect the past with the present.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION This year, Albany will commemorate 400 years of Dutch culture in the region alongside the 400th anniversary of the founding of Fort Orange, the first permanent Dutch settlement that developed into the present-day city of Albany. In honor of this milestone, the Albany Institute of History & Art (AIHA) is developing Delights of the Senses, an exhibition centered around a partnership with The Leiden Collection, one of the preeminent private collections of seventeenth-century Dutch paintings in the United States. ABOUT THE PAINTINGS AND OBJECTS This show will present paintings and objects that examine 17th-century Dutch culture through the five senses. On view will be paintings of everyday life by Dutch artists such as Gerrit Dou (1613–75), Jan Steen (1626–79), and Frans van Mieris (1635–81) alongside objects similar to those in the paintings. Additionally, several prints from the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar College will be included in the exhibition, as are objects from the New York State Museum. On display together, these paintings and objects will invite viewers to imagine daily moments in an earlier time—whether it be an encounter with lively music, soft fur, a fragrant bouquet, or a hoppy glass of beer—as they were perceived not just through the eyes, but all the senses. While the exhibition’s focus is historic, the uncanny experience of allowing taste, touch, sight, sound, or smell to evoke past life experiences is one to which many of us can relate. AIHA curators alongside The Leiden Collection curator developed a robust checklist of twenty works to be included in the exhibition. These works are anticipated to arrive at the museum in late summer. Work on the catalogue began in January 2024, with the goal of delivering the finalized book to the printer in late spring, and on-site in the museum shop for the opening. A special opening reception will be held for major contributors in September.

Harvest Hunt is a self-guided outdoor scavenger hunt among the painted leaves and last blooms of summer for decorated pumpkins that tell the story of "A Day in the Life at Locust Grove in 1901!" Maps in hand, kids and caregivers will delight in the decorated pumpkins and educational signage with historic photos, maps, and information about the people who lived and worked here, the trees and flowers that grew here, and the animals, both domesticated and wild that contributed to the estate's rich history. Rockefeller Jr., this site boasts scenic views overlooking the Hudson, lush forests, and remnants of 19th century luxuries. The hike is about 2 miles roundtrip; leashed dogs are welcome.

@ Mount Holly Preserve

Mt. Holly Preserve Hike with Optional Nature Meditation in Katonah. Discover this small gem of a preserve tucked away from it all in Northern Westchester. This 1 1/2 mile, moderate hike will be led by the preserve steward and Lewisboro Land Trust (LLT) board member, Paul Collura, who has made many improvements to the trails since the preserve was acquired by LLT from The Nature Conservancy in 2020. An optional guided nature meditation will take place at the end of the hike in a woodland clearing created by a local Eagle Scout.

@ Tallman Mountain State Park

We will hike through the historical Tallman Mountain State Park and learn its interesting history as a former oil tank farm. Then it’s out the Piermont Pier to follow in the footsteps of the 40,000 US Troops per month who marched to the waiting ships to transport them to the Atlantic Theatre during WWII. Finally, we will learn of the historic transformation of Piermont, NY from a blue collar factory town to its present day status.

@ Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site

“Spencer’s Additional Regiment” reenactors will conduct camp activities while explaining how they followed Washington’s Continental Army and provided support during the American Revolution. Visit the 18th century military camp to learn about the unit’s start in New Jersey and their presence at Stony Point during the Benedict Arnold/West Point betrayal in 1780.

This annual event will show you how pet friendly NYS Parks can be for your furry friends, so bring them along! We will have a guided hike to kick off the event, an agility course, assorted animal care vendors, live music, raffle items, and several animal rescue organizations in attendance. A portion of proceeds from vendors as well as all raffle funds will be donated to regional rescue organizations. To boost the funds raised by the event, local crafted beers will be sold as well, so you can even enjoy “a pint for the pooches!” Please join us to show your support for Capitol Region pet pals in need. Visit Westmoreland Sanctuary for a 1-hour animal program followed by a 1-hour, 1-mile guided hike. Meet the Westmoreland animal ambassadors and learn about the different animal groups. Learn about and interact with insects, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. The more you learn about these animals, the more you learn about the natural world around us. The group will then take a short hike in the Sanctuary to learn about nature in the summer, forest and pond ecology, Westchester history, and native plants and animals. Other features at Westmoreland Sanctuary include a terrace garden with a small pond and children's playhouse, picnic area, live animals and exhibits within the museum and 8.5 miles of hiking trails. Cohoes began its rise to industrial prominence as a canal town. The Erie and Champlain Canals traversed Cohoes, and this network of waterways, along with abundant waterpower, made Cohoes a leader in the Industrial Revolution. On this tour, you will travel old canal towpaths where mules pulling barges once trod, see 170 year old limestone locks built by hand, and learn the history of this 19th century technological achievement. You will find out about the different routes the canal took through Cohoes over time, hear stories of life in a lively canal town, and learn how transportation and power canals and the Cohoes Falls led to the growth of the Harmony Mills and other industries in Cohoes. The walk will begin and end at the Cohoes Visitor Center.

The Schuylerville Lions Club is teaming up with Hudson Crossing Park to present the Tasting on the Hudson. Tasting on the Hudson returns this year even bigger and better with more tents and different layout at Hudson Crossing Park. Our event features local restaurants and food vendors hosting booths offering savory samples of their fare paired with booths offering wine, beer, spirits, and hard cider tastings available from the area's major and boutique distributors. We will be raffling several items donated from businesses in the community as well as a 50/50. While exploring our forests, fields, and wetlands, Dr. Canham will discuss how land use has transformed Hudson Valley landscapes. Discover how current forest composition is a reflection of past farming practices, and how the future forest will be influenced by climate change, pests and pathogens, and air pollution. Free (except per car $10 parking fee), easy, 2-mile/2-hour round trip hike along the Old Croton Aqueduct to the top of the beautiful Croton Dam. Meet near the restrooms at the rear (south end) of the park. The leader of the hike will discuss the history and construction of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the features of the Croton Dam, the trailhead of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail. The Aqueduct was completed in 1842 to supply fresh water to a thirsty New York City. From Metro-North Hudson Line Croton-Harmon Train Station: 15-minute taxi.

@ Hudson River Maritime Museum,

Experience stunning views of the Esopus Meadows and Rondout Lighthouses on the Hudson River during this popular two-hour cruise each Sunday morning! Marking the entrance to Rondout Creek (Kingston, NY), the Rondout Lighthouse is a beautiful yellow brick structure. Completed in 1915, it is still a working navigational light. Located off of Black Creek in the Town of Esopus, the Esopus Meadows Lighthouse warned mariners away from the "Esopus Meadows," a shallow marshy area that the lighthouse is named after. Finished in 1871, it is the only wooden lighthouse left on the Hudson River. These are two of the remaining seven lighthouses on the Hudson River. Each has a long history as a beacon of light for mariners and home to lighthouse keepers and their families. Please note: On this sightseeing cruise, Solaris does not stop at either lighthouse. This tour covers the Color Garden remnants, the Vegetable Garden and Orchard, the Rhododendron Walk and Ruin Garden, the Carriage Trail to the Circular Fountain and the Temple of Love and Rock and Stream Garden. This route is moderately strenuous and cover a little less than 1 mile and a 182-foot vertical descent and ascent. Throughout the tour, you will learn about the rich history of Untermyer Gardens and walk through the most recently restored areas. The tour will emphasize the estate's world-famous heyday during the Untermyer years, its decline after 1940, and the remarkable restoration efforts that have been ongoing since 2011 to the present day. The tour will also highlight the remarkable architecture of the gardens, with an emphasis on Samuel Untermyer and his wife Minnie, and their place in early 20th century history. You will learn about their contributions to the gardens, which are regarded as some of the most beautiful and intricate in the world.

Please bring water, a flashlight or headlamp, and wear comfortable closed-toed shoes. Long pants tucked into your socks are recommended to prevent exposure to ticks and poison ivy. ABOUT THE EXHIBITION The Albany Institute of History & Art (AIHA) is collaborating with the Stockbridge-Munsee Community Band of Mohican Indians (the indigenous inhabitants of this region) and contemporary Mohican artist Tamara Aupaumut to develop an exhibition celebrating 400 years of Mohican art, history, and culture. ABOUT THE PROGRAMMING Mohican artist Tamara Aupaumut’s self portrait Programming for this exhibition is multisensory and will span from the museum’s front lawn into the galleries. An ethnobotanical garden composed of Indigenous medicinal plants will be developed in partnership with Misty Cook, an herbalist who has studied the plants of the Stockbridge-Munsee community. That garden will be built in raised beds on the front lawn, welcoming visitors in, and allowing potential patrons to immediately experience exhibition programming for free. And a musical work composed by Mohican/Munsee-Lenape composer Brent Michael Davids will be performed to enrich the visual gallery experience. In 2024, Albany will commemorate the 400th anniversary of the founding of Fort Orange, the first permanent Dutch settlement in the area that developed into the present-day city of Albany. AIHA will host a contemporaneous exhibition that uplifts Indigenous curators and artists, giving them space to share their version of the history of this land. Art classes developed by Education staff will further complement the exhibition

This will be a walk around Louisa Pond. We will visit the interpretive display about Sojourner Truth, who crossed this area when she freed herself from enslavement. The area is rich in native plants and wildlife. We'll see signs of wildlife and we will identify some interesting plants. The pond itself is beautiful to see and hosts frogs, beaver, and many other critters. There are also many birds to see and hear. Louisa Pond is part of the Shaupeneak Ridge Park. Shaupeneak Ridge is protected by Scenic Hudson and is maintained in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the West Esopus Landowners Association. The walk is free and part of the Speak to the Earth series. You can learn more about Speak to the Earth at https://speaktotheearth.org. It is offered in partnership with the YMCA of Kingston and Ulster County. The walk will take about 2 hours. The trail is less than 2 miles around the lake. The free bus will leave the Kingston YMCA at 9 AM and return by Noon. You have to register with YMCA to take the bus. If you meet us at the Louisa Pond parking area we will be there by 9:30 AM. The walk will be done by 11:30 AM.

This leisurely 60-minute walking tour led by one of our expert volunteer guides will cover the Walled Garden and Lower Terrace, including the newly-restored Persian Pool with its intricate sea creature mosaics and Temple of the Sky with its restored Medusa mosaic. All the paths are flat stone dust, and there are two short flights of steps. There are no hills to climb. Throughout the tour, you will learn about the rich history of Untermyer Gardens, beginning with its origin in 1862. The tour will take you through the estate's three owners, emphasizing its world-famous heyday during the Untermyer years, its decline after 1940, and the remarkable restoration efforts that have been ongoing since 2011 to the present day. The tour will also highlight the remarkable architecture of the gardens, with an emphasis on Samuel Untermyer and his wife Minnie, and their place in early 20th century history. You will learn about their contributions to the gardens, which are regarded as some of the most beautiful and intricate in the world. There will be some limited discussion of the horticulture but the magnificent plantings will mostly speak for themselves.

The sails aboard Whimbrel, our sloop-rigged Catboat, will depart at 10AM, 11AM, 12PM, 1PM, 2PM, and 3PM. Each sail will be approximately 45 minutes long. The free sails are on a "first come, first served" basis. No reservations will be accepted prior to the sail day. Guests can sign up at the yellow Ferry Sloops tent beginning at 9:30AM for any of the day's scheduled sail times (limit of 4 passengers per sail). The boat's captain reserves the right to cancel any or all of the day's sails, if weather conditions make it unsafe for sailing. There is NO Rain date. Passenger age requirement: must be at least 12 years old, under 18 years old must be accompanied by parent or adult guardian (no exceptions). Free parking is available on the street (Westerly Road). @ The Hudson River Maritime Museum's Wooden Boat School

In this class you will learn the basic weaving pattern called fiber rush weave. The class starts with assembling a small stool, followed by making a seat of rush weave using an all natural, paper-based fibre rush. Students will learn to make tight, square corners, and perfect a figure eight weaving pattern. The class includes all the materials necessary to leave with a beautiful hand-woven footstool.

Celebrate the start of a new season with a Sunrise Stroll on the World’s Longest Elevated Pedestrian Bridge. During the vernal and autumnal equinoxes, the sun rises in line with the Walkway deck, making for a spectacular photo opportunity. We’re opening the gates early on both approaches to allow everyone to enjoy this magnificent experience. There’s no cost to attend Sunrise Stroll.

@ Otter Creek Preserve

Come walk with WLT's Vice President of Conservation! The vibrant mix of coastal waters, marsh, wooded wetlands and uplands, vernal pool, and edge habitats, makes Otter Creek Preserve reserve an important site for migratory birds, marine life, insects, reptiles and amphibians, fish, and mammals. The preserve offers significant passive recreation opportunities as it has a forested upland trail approximately three-quarters of a mile in length adjacent to the wetland. There is a seasonally active osprey nesting platform. The viewshed afforded from being nestled along the Mamaroneck coastline attracts birdwatchers (more than 100 species of birds have been recorded here), wildlife lovers, photographers, and botanists. Parking Information: Otter Creek Preserve is located on Taylors Lane in Mamaroneck. Turn onto Taylors Lane from Boston Post Road and go 0.5 miles, past the ‘Private Road’ sign. Near the end of Taylors Lane, the preserve is visible on the right side of the road. Parking is on the right along the split rail fence.

This class is for students of all ages focusing on drawing in the Hudson Highlands at Northgate (the old Cornish estate). Students will be instructed to create observational drawings at the site. Instruction will include pencil types and their uses, shading, blending and how to build a drawing. This class will also include history about Thomas Cole and the Hudson River School. All drawing materials will be provided & no experience necessary! This class will meet at 9:30 AM at the Hudson Highlands State Park Parking Lot, across from Little Stony Point (3007 Bear Mountain-Beacon Hwy, Cold Spring, NY 10516). We will hike up to the Cornish Estate together and learn how to draw, and then have a picnic lunch break around 12. We will continue drawing until we hike back to the parking lot at 2:30 with our masterpieces. Thom Johnson is a lifetime resident of the Hudson Valley who has used ruins as inspiration for much of his work. Thom was the Art Teacher for the Irvington High School for over 30 years. He has also been working with the State Park staff to clear and care for the Northgate site.

Sink or Sing: A Walking Tour about Crime, Punishment, Labor, and the Hudson River Region Join the staff at the Sing Sing Prison Museum for a walking tour along the Hudson River and around the edges of the Sing Sing Correctional Facility. From the Hudson River School of Art and a bustling port community to the walled fortress of a maximum-security prison, there is so much to explore and see in a mile radius. Learn about the building of the 1825 original cell block, the quarrying of Sing Sing marble, the origin of the US penal philosophy and design. We will also discuss the labor that built this place, products developed here, and some innovative examples of reform and rehabilitation. This tour offers some dark history in a stunningly beautiful place. The tour will end with a reflective art making project to link us back to the Hudson River School. We will meet at the Louis Engel Waterfront Park in front of the Ossining Boat and Canoe Club a short walk from the Ossining Metro North Train Station.

In partnership with the Museum of the American Revolution (MAR) in Philadelphia, the Site will showcase the Museum’s “Traveling Replicas of the First Oval Office Project”, Washington’s emblematic marquee war tents and host their staff for a two--day special event program to launch OPRHP’s celebration of the semiquincentennial. The Site will provide: professional reenactors General Washington and Mrs. Washington to engage visitors and regimental reenactors performing military drills and demonstrations of camp life; Hasbrouck House tours to see how this family home was transformed into the longest headquarters of the war; exhibits about General Washington’s Life and Legacy, the Defense of the Hudson and the Preservation of the Site; collections including over 1,300 objects; and opportunities to learn about other Revolutionary War sites in the Palisades Region and across the State Historic Site system and the variety of programming that will occur throughout the 250th celebration.

@ Albany County Historical Association-Ten Broeck Mansion

Theft and vandalism of historical objects plague museums nationwide. And yet, many repositories still fail to recognize the vulnerability of their collections to loss. Any museum seeking to provide the best possible security for its collections must implement coordinated policies that address threats for long-term sustainable access to the public. With careful planning, awareness of warning signs, and proactive security solutions, museums can reduce the window of opportunity for collection damage and theft. This full-day workshop, which will be led by conservator and preservation consultant Donia Conn, is a deep dive into the theft and vandalism of collections. In the morning, participants will learn about: risk awareness; insider theft; facility design and security technology; security of information systems; working with vendors and contractors; research room management and design; developing institutional security policies and procedures; and post-event response. In the afternoon, an activity will allow participants to assess a staged museum space and identify the site's theft risk.

Salley Mavor is an award-winning fiber artist whose artwork creates make-believe miniature worlds full of characters, props, and scenery, all created by hand with stitching, fabric, beads, wire, and found objects. Enchanting Threads: The Art of Salley Mavor showcases the exceptional detail and three-dimensional quality of her fabric relief illustrations and sculptural needlework. This exhibition includes a wide array of original picture book illustrations spanning Mavor’s career, including the entire series of artwork for her most recent book, MY BED: Enchanting Ways to Fall Asleep around the World. Among the eighty works in the exhibition are recent pieces that explore cultural diversity, migration, fashion, the natural world, and a range of social narratives, from the everyday to topical subjects. Salley Mavor has spent four decades developing her signature style and working methods, carving out her own niche within the children’s book world and the fiber art community. Her work is applied in many ways, including children’s books, editorial illustration, and stop-motion animation

Autumn Magic at Hurds 7th-generation family-run pick-your-own apple farm with a pumpkin orchard and is just minutes from the thruway about 1.5 hours north of NYC. @ Mountain Top Arboretum

Harriet Tubman (ca.1822-1913) is most renowned for her work as an Underground Railroad conductor who freed more than 70 people from slavery. She later went on to free close to 750 people from slavery during the Civil War at the Combahee River, becoming the first woman in U.S. history to lead a military raid in 1863. What is lesser known is how Tubman achieved these feats through an inner and outer vision connecting her disabled body with the natural environment through her deep-seated spiritual faith. Dr. Janell Hobson will explore the complex history of Tubman's Black eco-feminist consciousness, from slavery in the South to post-emancipation freedom in upstate New York, in this public lecture. Janell Hobson is Professor in the Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University at Albany. She is also Director of both Undergraduate Studies and the Honors Program. She joined the core faculty shortly after receiving her PhD in Women's Studies at Emory University. Hobson has since devoted her research, teaching, and service to multiracial and transnational feminist issues in the discipline with a focus on representations and histories of women in the African Diaspora. Visitors are welcome to tour the grounds, which are open until dusk.

@ Bear Mountain State Park - Trailside Museums and Zoo

Did you know Bear Mountain was once the scene of an intense, Revolutionary War battle? Come for a unique, walking tour of one of the Hudson Valley's most dramatic battle sites! Using firsthand accounts and archaeological data, this tour will chart the flow of the battle of the Twin Forts starting at Bear Mountain State Park and ending up at Fort Clinton (today site of Trailside Museums and Zoo) focusing on the intense fighting that happened in and around Fort Clinton on the day of the battle. @ The historic South End, The Pastures and Lincoln Park, Albany, NY

Lincoln Park is currently under construction and the original path of Beaver Creek has been daylighted to some extent. It is the perfect time to discuss the use of Beaver Creek in the 17th and 18th centuries and to discuss the evolution of the city and its effects on Beaver Creek. This walk/talk will follow the original path of Beaver Creek and discuss how it has been redirected by humans over time.

From Mohican homeland to colonial farmland, from stately country seat to national historic site, the landscape of Montgomery Place Campus of Bard College has changed considerably, especially over the last 400 years. We’ll walk the trails past an old growth forest, meander through the meadows, and stroll the gardens while observing modernization’s impact on the land and water, not to mention on the diverse peoples whose history here goes back thousands of years. Enjoy a ramble along the remnants of the recently reclaimed Morning Walk. Take in spectacular views of the Mahicannituck and the homelands of what is now known as the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe of the Mohican Nation. Walk the Wilderness trails in the ravine formed by the Metambesem/Sawkill Creek. Natural and historical highlights include cascading waterfalls & the hydropower station, the allée of the Arboretum, as well as the exterior of the 1805 mansion. We’ll also visit the rough and formal gardens and view the site of the former 19th century glass conservatory, the showcase and botanical workshop of pioneering African-American head gardener, Alexander Gilson.

Sometimes a name fails to describe the event and that is certainly the case with this show. Given that the event was previously owned by Altamont Orchards, apples were and are still an integral part of the show. After parking their cars, customers are ushered into the Fairgrounds that houses arts, crafts, specialty foods, and apples. This serves as the shopping component, and an opportunity for the public to buy directly from the maker. After exiting the Marketplace, one follows a path lined with more booths also offering their wares for sale. Along the way there will be juggling acts and a wandering magician, and even a stage for music. Then, the appetizing cider donuts and cider from the orchard in addition to a dozen food booths and food trucks offering steak, fries, BBQ, potato pancakes, sausage and onions, Mid-Eastern food chicken kebabs, falafel, lemonade, ice cream, pizza, and a lot more. And then the New York Wine and Spirits building and tent, which requires proof of age. where customers receive a commemorative tasting glass and can proceed to sample and taste wines and spirits from 25 NY producers. Usually there is an incredible amount of buying as the customers purchase their favorites. Further along there is a fantastic Kids Zone with bouncy houses, climbing walls, games, bow and arrows, and educational exhibits with live owls and hawks. NOTE: New in 2024 LIVE MIUSIC at 12, 2, and 4 both days.. After all that, there’s the road back, passing all the booths and entertainment, until, finally, The Marketplace barn, making last minute purchases, buying some apples, and heading home after a fun filled day.

The 14th Annual Newburgh Open Studios tour offers a unique opportunity to see the work and meet many of the artists in the City of Newburgh's burgeoning arts community. The studios are located in some amazing historic buildings, most of which are rarely open to the public. This is a self-guided tour, much of it walkable from Newburgh Art Supply. This year's tour is dedicated to its late founder, Gerardo Castro. Maps will be available on both days starting at 10:00am at Newburgh Art Supply, 5 Grand Street.

@ Olana State Historic Site

Bring a family heirloom, gift from a loved one, or any memorable object to this workshop where students will prepare to express meaning through still-life drawing. Participants will use charcoal to draw on newsprint and Strathmore papers, participating in demos as they work from the objects. Detailed Times/Hours: In partnership with the Hudson River Valley Ramble, HHS invites you to join us on Saturdays this September from 2:00 to 3:00 PM (eastern time) for “‘Go Back and Get It’: A Two-Part Historic House Tour Examining Black Impacts and Experiences on Huguenot Street.” Sankofa, which translates to “go back and get it,” is a concept taken from the Akan people of Ghana. It emphasizes the importance of learning from the past, even in instances where history has been erased or forgotten. Despite the impacts of countless enslaved and free Black residents over centuries of New Paltz’s history, historical writing and programming in the 20th century all too often pushed them to the periphery or avoided their mention entirely. In this program, we will use the concept of Sankofa to guide discussions around reconstructing this previously erased history. During each tour, HHS Tours & Interpretation Manager, Eddie Moran, will lead guests through one of our historic homes as we explore Black history on Huguenot Street. Part 1, offered September 7th and September 21st, will examine the experiences of enslaved Africans in early New Paltz and their impact in establishing the community as you tour the Abraham Hasbrouck House. Part 2, offered September 14th and September 28th, will explore emancipation in New York and the free Black community which emerged in New Paltz as you tour the historic Deyo House.

Detailed Times/Hours: Gates are open from 8am - 8pm there is an entrance fee of $6 on the weekends. The program should be late enough to avoid the entrance fee to the park, and the gate will be left open for exiting the park after the program.

Grafton Lakes has been hosting Guided kayak tours and they have been in high demand! The thing we've been hearing most is that people want a late kayak tour, so we're giving them one! This will be a guided paddle of Long pond, starting when the sun is up and returning when the sun has set.

We will be joined this year by the Southern Dutchess Coalition Mass Choir under the direction of Sharlene Stout, For His Glory from Orange County under the direction of Pastor April Keaton, and the Ulster County Mass Choir under the direction of Dennis Washington and Elder Albert Cook.

Detailed Times/Hours: This event will take place from 11am-4pm. Tours of the Senate House will be available from 10am-4pm, but there will be a charge for the tours. The outdoor event is free.

Experience some key Autumn activities from the 18th century and enjoy the season! There will be demonstrations of blacksmithing, meat smoking, candle dipping, pressing apples, and more. There will also be live performances of juggling, fire spitting, and tightrope walking! The outdoor event is FREE, but there is a charge to tour the house and museum.

@ Untermyer Park & Gardens

Detailed Times/Hours: Open Daily 9:00 AA until one hour before sunset, 7 days a week, free admission

This tour highlights the history of the estate from its origin in 1862, through each of its three owners, emphasizing its world famous heyday in the Untermyer years, its dramatic decline after 1940, and the remarkable restoration efforts that have been ongoing from 2011 to the present day. There will be an emphasis on Samuel Untermyer and his wife and their place in early 20th century history as well as discussion of the remarkable architecture of the gardens. There will be some limited discussion of the horticulture but the magnificent plantings will mostly speak for themselves. Children twelve and under are free. As the tour goes down the steps of the Vista and then back up a woodland path to the Temple of Love, we suggest sturdy shoes. Strollers are not advised for the tours.

Tour Rondout Creek Aboard Solaris: a 100% Solar Powered Boat Built by the Hudson River Maritime Museum! Explore the many sights on Rondout Creek and learn about its rich past and connection to the Hudson River. For most of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the village of Rondout boomed with barges, passenger steamboats, tugboats, shipbuilding, as well as the transportation of coal from Pennsylvania, locally produced bluestone, natural cement, bricks, natural ice, and more. As we cruise up Rondout Creek, you will learn about the industrial history of the area and view impressive sights such as the remnants of historic structures including Island Dock, the Wurts Street suspension bridge, railroad bridge, and the locations of sunken barges. In addition, your guide will show you the sites of modern industrial activity, including the Feeney Shipyard and various marinas along the creek, while explaining their unique histories and current uses.
